Disfigured Nepali man, in U.S. for surgery, comes to Norfolk to see his portrait

NORFOLK, Neb. — The man from Nepal stands before an oil painting, a near-mirror image of his severely disfigured face. His one good eye begins to fill with tears.

“I like it,” he says softly. “I like it.”

Ashok Shrestha has traveled far to be able to stand here in the Norfolk Arts Center to see his portrait, cast lovingly on canvas in soft lines and muted colors. He has come a long way to meet the Omaha artist who painted him and to experience something he had begun to sense online — that he is not alone.

Surrounding him on the four walls of this gallery space are almost three dozen portraits of other sufferers. Here is Derrick from Tucson, paralyzed and portrayed in his USA Rugby uniform. Here is Joan from Mississippi, mottled with pea-size tumors and sitting at her beloved piano keyboard. Here is Keisha from Malaysia, swimming with dolphins before her death at age 25.
