Flood Victim in Nepal

Nepal has been hit by heavy rainfall since Thursday. More than 20 districts and 10,385 thouseholds have been affected.

Thirty-two people are reported to be missing in the rain-related incidents that have thrown normal life out of gear in central and eastern parts of the country.

Many parts of Kathmandu, including Kalanki, Kupondole, Kuleshwor and Balkhu were submerged under water on Friday.

Heavy rains since Thursday have hit 20 of Nepal's 77 districts, in the hills as well as in southern plains, according to The Himalayan Times. A statement issued by the Home Ministry of Nepal said that the collapse of houses and structures in the wake of the heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of most people across Nepal.

Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warned of more troubles ahead in a flood warning for the southern region near the main rivers, urging people to keep watch on rising water levels and move to higher ground when needed.

Nepal's largest river, the Koshi, which flows into the north Indian state of Bihar, had risen above dangerous level, authorities said.

Message from President:

Dear Community friends,

Although many of us can enjoy the comfort of a house and a vibrant summer weather here in the United States, the monsoon rains in Nepal have developed a rather contrasting situation. Flooding in Nepal caused by extremely heavy rains and weak soil structures have forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes. The floods have destroyed houses, roads, crops, and have displaced families both in Nepal and multiple states in India.

The sorrow-filled videos of people in such unfortunate situations are extremely difficult when many of the helping hands are so far away from our homeland. Nebraska Nepalese Society has initiated fundraising opportunities through the website and Facebook page to collect funds that will go into helping the emergency management department in any part of our country Nepal, or any government or non-governmental agencies providing assistance to victims of the disaster caused by floods. The best way to help after a disaster is to make a financial contribution to the charity of your choice. Many of you may have already started this process and we are grateful for that, but this opportunity is being given to those who are unaware of where to give.

Though, we understand that we are not able to meet every need that comes our way; and while we cannot do everything alone, I believe if we all get together, we can do a small something that will in turn become significant.

Raj Acharya
